Life in a student flat starts rough but gets colourful. The carpet smelled like beer, quirky chairs for living room but we filled it with life. Flat-pack breaks too quick, so we begged, borrowed and carried. We carried a wingback through Dalston. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s why it worked. Vintage sofas feel alive, and we don’t need polish, we need real. I’ve fallen asleep in a battered contemporary leather armchair with a book, and funky arm chair the furniture was part of the night.

Markets spill chairs onto the streets, and dealers live for it. We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and the place was full of funky retro chairs. we had to haggle, but that chair still sits in the flat. Ask around and you’ll hear it. it’s half the fun. Retro sofas don’t care if you spill. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but real pieces stay alive. every stain means another night. Once the parties are done, the dodgy landlord fades away, but the vintage pieces carry the whole story.

If you find yourself in a Shoreditch flat, skip the flat-pack rubbish. Choose a funky accent chair, and see how it shapes your memories.
