When I moved to Shoreditch I had nothing but a mattress. The windows rattled in the wind, but we dragged in whatever we could find. New furniture is soulless, so we begged, buy armchairs borrowed and carried. Someone even nabbed a table from outside a pub. Everything mismatched, but that’s what made it real. Vintage sofas feel alive, and it doesn’t matter if it’s scratched. I’ve hosted ten people on one sagging retro sofa, and the chairs became mates.

Shoreditch is perfect for this life, and shops in the area thrive on it. My flatmate dragged me into Smithers, funky chairs for living room and the accent chairs were bold and weird. we were broke students, but it’s become the throne of the house. We’ve all dragged furniture through rain. it’s where life happens. Vintage pieces survive it. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but funky chairs grow with you. every dent becomes part of the flat. When you’re moving out, the dodgy landlord fades away, cool chair but you remember the sofa.

So if you’re moving to London, leave the glossy showrooms behind. Make space for a classic seat, and watch it age with you.
