Student living in East London is messy but fun. The carpet smelled like beer, but we filled it with life. New furniture is soulless, so we begged, borrowed and carried. Someone even nabbed a table from outside a pub. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what made it real. Funky retro luxury lounge seating has character, and students get that instinctively. I’ve watched half my flat pass out across two chairs, and the furniture was part of the night.

Retro furniture feels natural here, and dealers live for it. My flatmate dragged me into Smithers, and the accent chairs were bold and weird. we had to haggle, but it’s survived three house parties and a flood. Ask around and you’ll hear it. It’s part of student life. Furniture with scars feels built for students. Brand-new looks boring, but funky chairs grow with you. Every scratch adds more story. When you’re moving out, retro lounge chairs the cracked window gets forgotten, but the mismatched set still makes you laugh.

Next time you walk past a market, skip the flat-pack rubbish. Pick up a vintage armchair, and make it part of your story.
